May 15, 2015 Day 20 - Mansilla --> Leon - 18 K by bus

May 15, 2015  Day 20 - Mansilla --> Leon - Bus 18 K

Caught the 9:05 am bus for the 40 minute ride to Leon for our "rest" day. While it was hard to watch the pilgrims hiking along the way and not feel a little remorse, I really do believe that taking the bus was a good idea. This is not a competition, and sometimes you have to learn to give yourself some slack. It is OK.

Upon arriving at the bus station in Leon, we had about a 20 minute walk to our hotel. We checked in but we're told we could not get in until 12:00 noon. So, we walked to the cathedral and went to the tourist info office. Then walked through some of the streets. Saw an ad for a little bus "train" tour of the city, and thought that might be a good way to see the highlights without having to be on our feet. The problem was we had to wait a good hour for the next little bus. Plus, we were really hungry and no good options apparent. When we finally got on the tour, it was somewhat of a disappointment. By the time we were done, I just wanted something to eat and to get to the hotel and take a nap and rest.

We found a restaurant that actually served spaghetti bolognese which was quite good. Shopped for some apples and snacks, then finally got back to the hotel around 3:00 pm. I tried to nap, but couldn't get to sleep. Around 5:00 pm, we walked back to the square by the cathedral to "pilgrim watch". Saw a few people we knew. Then took a quick tour of the cathedral. Tried to find something to eat, Donna gave up and went back to the hotel. I wandered around for a bit and finally landed at Mel's Diner, where I had a wonderful Philly cheesesteak. Took out a salad for Donna and returned to the hotel.

Tomorrow, we head to Villar de Masarife, approx. 21.8 K. This is a very small town with few lodging options. We booked a room at an albergue that may be an experience...We will probably try to get out early in the morning.

Buen Camino!

Kim
